Scorpions Begin Spring Practice
6 Days Before Season Opener

Posted January 12, 2008
Baseball is in the air -- and it's only mid-January.

The UTB/TSC Scorpions reported back to work at Scorpion Field Saturday, January 12, for the first practice of the Spring, only six days before the season begins.

"When you come back from the Christmas holidays, you know it's time to go," Scorpion coach Joel Barta said. "It's time to get to work and play some baseball. It's really exciting."

The Scorpions open a 52-game season with a home doubleheader Saturday, January 19, against Wayland Baptist University.

"Fortunately for us, we don't have to wait very long," Barta said. "We have only six days to begin playing baseball for real."

While NCAA institutions cannot begin playing games until February 23, NAIA teams do not have any restrictions when they can begin.

UTB/TSC returns 13 players from a 17-26-2 team that just missed qualifying for the Red River Athletic Conference playoffs in 2007.
