Camorlinga To Play for Mexico in Big League International Tournament
Posted June 4, 2008
UTB/TSC Scorpion outfielder Jorge Camorlinga will compete internationally for the third time in his life as a member of Team Mexico at the Big League International Tournament June 20-29 in Maracaibo, Venezuela.
Camorlinga,
who plays center field, is the leadoff hitter for the Matamoros All-Star
Team. At the Big League Regional Tournament May 30-31, Matamoros won
three games for the right to represent Mexico at the International
Tournament. The winner of the International Tournament advances to the
Big League World Series July 26-August 2 at Easley, South Carolina.
Camorlinga has played for the Mexico international team twice – first as member of the Matamoros All-Star team that advanced to the Little League World Series in 2001, and then as a member of the Matamoros Senior League All-Star team that advanced to the Senior League World Series in 2005.
Big League and Senior League are affiliates of Little League Baseball International.
“Going to the Little League World Series and Senior League World Series has prepared me for college baseball,” Camorlinga said. “The level of baseball played there is very high.”
Camorlinga graduated from Hanna High School in 2007. As a freshman on the Scorpion baseball team, he cracked into the regular starting line-up at mid-season. He finished as the team’s leading hitter with a .372 average, collecting 57 hits in 145 at bats, scoring 52 runs to lead the team in all three categories.
Because Camorlinga will turn 19 years old this month, this season will be his last year involved in the Little League Baseball.
“I’m looking forward to representing Mexico one last time,” Camorlinga said. “I had chances to play other places this summer, but wanted to have a chance to go to another World Series. Now, if we win this tournament, I’ll have that chance.”
