Scorpion golfer Anthony Lopez took medalist honors and the UTB/TSC men's golf team finished second at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor Fall Invitational Monday at the Mill Creek Country Club in Salado Tuesday.
After an opening round 72, Lopez came back Tuesday and fired a 71, winning individual honors by two strokes with a 143.
"It's a good way to come back," said Lopez, who did not play during the 2005-06 season. "I took a whole year off competing and I missed it. But now we have real strong team, and I'm glad to be part of it."
Lopez, a junior, did not play last year because he had already completed eligibility in the junior college ranks. UTB/TSC is playing in a four-year program for the first time this year in the NAIA.
The Scorpions finished second with a 599 total, three shots behind tournament host UMHB. The Scorpions actually tied UT-Tyler for second, but took home the second place plaque because of a stronger fifth man score.
Agapito Lopez shot a 78 Tuesday after an opening round 73 for a 151 total. Jones Mitchell shot a 73-82=155 and Chris Milligan shot a 76-81=157 to complete the Scorpion foursome. Jerry Borgogni's 85-75=160 was important for bringing home the second place honor.
"This is a great way to start," said first-year Scorpion coach Bob Lucio. "People now know that we're serious about our program. We're going to work extra hard to make this even better."
