LUBBOCK –- The UTB/TSC women's golf team is in seventh place after the opening day of the Red River Athletic Conference and Region VI Championships at the Rawls Golf Course Monday, April 16.

The second and final round begins Tuesday, April 17. The individual medalist and the winning team qualify for the NAIA National Championships May 15-18 at Lake San Marcos Country Club in San Diego, California.

April Martinez led the Scorpions in scoring, but her opening round 90 was 11 shots behind leader Tamara Campbell of Oklahoma City University. Martinez shot 46 on the front nine and 44 on the back nine.

"Conditions were brutal, they were tough; It was very cold for everyone." Scorpion head coach Bob Lucio said. "There was only one score that broke 80. We got beat by everything. We were ready to play, but we just ran into something very uncontrollable. We hope to find a way to save strokes tomorrow."

Other scores were Allison Valle 50-50=100, Tara Calderon 51-50=101, Deena Dutchover 49-52=101, and Annette Valdez 57-57=114.

The tournament highlight for the Scorpions came Sunday during the practice round, when Martinez shot a hole-in-one on the par-three, 135-yard third hole witnessed by Lucio and her teammates. "That was fun to watch," Lucio said. "That's her third one, which is three more than I have ever had."
