Sophomore April Martinez was two shots off the individual lead at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor Fall Invitational Monday at Mill Creek Country Club in Salado, but the Scorpions were far behind the leaders as a team.

Martinez shot a first-round 80, trailing leader Delilah Dominguez of Southwestern University, who shot a 78. Three others are bunched up at 79 and Martinez is one of four players who shot an opening-round 80.

"April will blow away the golf courses," said Scorpion coach Bob Lucio. "Once her short game improves, she'll be overpowering in all phases of the game."

As a team, the Scorpions shot 384, 61 shots behind the leader Southwestern University. Tara Calderon had a 100, and Allison Valles and Annette Valdez each had 102s.
