Scorpion Student-Athletes Honored at Banquet

After a year in which UTB/TSC made its debut in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, student-athletes were recognized at the Scorpion Athletics Banquet at the Grán Salón Sunday, May 6.

Among the guests of honor were UTB/TSC President Dr. Juliet Garcia, Provost Dr. José G. Martín, Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Hilda Silva, and special guest speaker former Major League Baseball player Charlie Vaughan. 

Vaughan spoke about the NAIA Champions of Character Core Values and how each one of the values can be translated into a person's life. Garcia spoke about the importance of athletics to the student body and how much the Athletics program has grown in the last two years.

The individual awards presented included:

Volleyball
Offensive Player of the Year: Greta Billerbeck, Junior
Defensive Player of the Year: Joanna Knight, Junior
Freshman of the Year: Lauren Bayer, Freshman
Coach’s Award: Katie Japp, Sophomore

Men’s Golf
Low Stroke Award: Anthony Lopez, Junior
Newcomer of the Year: Anthony Lopez, Junior
Coach’s Award: Chris Milligan, Freshman

Women’s Golf
Low Stroke Award: April Martinez, Sophomore
Newcomer of the Year: Tara Calderon, Junior
Coach’s Award: Allison Valles, Sophomore

Baseball
Player of the Year: Jacob Yousif, Freshman
Johnny Ballgame Award: Walter Blume, Freshman
Foreman Award: Noe Gonzales, Sophomore
Tough as Nails Award: Gilbert Gonzales, Senior
Newcomer of the Year: Jacob Yousif, Freshman

Four senior athletes were also honored -- baseball players Hawk Scott and Gilbert Gonzales, volleyball player Marianna Naldi and women’s golfer Dena Dutchover.
