Bob Lucio |
Golf professional Robert Lucio has been named the head coach for the men's and women's golf program at UTB/TSC.
Lucio has been a teaching professional and coach for golfers at every level in Brownsville for 20 years, the last 19 of which have been as golf pro at Fort Brown Memorial Golf Course.
"I am very pleased to have Bob join our athletic department as its first full-time head coach," said Dan Huntley, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "Bob will help elevate our program as we move into NAIA and Red River Athletic Conference play this year."
The Lucio name is synonymous with golf in Brownsville. His older brother Jesse has been the head men's and women's coach since 1998 and will take over as assistant coach.
"Bob has a great understanding of the direction our athletic department is moving and his willingness to adapt the Champions of Character program into our golf program played an important part in his being offered this position," Huntley said. "It makes sense that he will now be a part of the culmination of the golf program by leading our university’s teams."
Lucio has been involved with coaching in the City of Brownsville and Brownsville ISD Summer Recreation Junior Golf Program at Fort Brown since 1987. He is currently the Golf Professional on-call for the First Tee Greater Brownsville program.
"I'm very excited about this because I've worked with our youth for so many years and seen them develop as good golfers," Lucio said. "Now working with mature golfers gets me pumped up even more. It's exciting to take an individual and make them the best they can be."
Lucio played on the Hooter's Golf tour from 1995-99, attended the PGA Tour Qualifying School in 1999 and 2000, and played on the Tight Lies Tour from 2000-04. He and his five brothers learned golf at a young age, and all are among the area's outstanding golfers.
"I've been blessed being a pro that because this is what I love to do," Lucio said. "I'm one of the lucky ones."
