Athletic Fee Referendum Passes by 151 Votes

Posted November 15, 2006

UTB/TSC students passed a referendum to establish an athletic fee by 1,082-931 Wednesday, November 15.

The referendum was brought to the student body to establish a new fee that will separate the athletic budget from the current Student Services fee.

The fee will be used to expand student life opportunities and continue the expansion of athletic program offerings.

"This shows how determined the student body is when they want something for the university," said Abraham Ponce, Student Government President. "This shows the power of the student voice. SGA wasn't taking a stand at first, but they came together at the end to take that leadership role and take a stand. The senators saw the value and this and took a stand and it paid off."

Students would be assessed $7 per semester credit hour starting in Fall 2008. The referendum must still approved by the Texas Legislature in its Spring 2007 session.

"Everybody is so excited about what is happening with athletics," said Dr. Hilda Silva, Vice President for Student Affairs. "Our athletic programs are doing a tremendous job."

Voting was held for a two-day period on November 14 and 15 at the Education & Business Complex, Student Union, Cardenas Hall South, Tandy Hall and the International, Educational and Technology Campus.

The fee will help to expand athletic programs, provide additional opportunities for participation, provide additional scholarships, build traditions, and increase fundraising opportunities.
