Linette Cuvillier scored two goals
to lead the UTB/TSC women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over
Texas A&M International University
in its season opener Sunday, August 31 at Morningside Park.
TAMIU dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Immediately after the game, the Scorpions departed on a bus for Houston and a matchup with Houston Baptist University Monday, September 1. The game was originally scheduled for 2 p.m. but has been moved up to 11 a.m. because of the threat of rain from Hurricane Gustav.
"We definitely happy with the win it's a good way to start the season," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "It's nice to have that first game under our belt. A lot of positive things came out of the game."
Cuvillier, a redshirt freshman, got the Scorpions on the scoreboard in the first half with a shot from the right side with 28:35 left in the first half. Sami Thorman was credited with an assist as the Scorpions took a 1-0 halftime lead.
With 24:24 left in the game, Cuvillier maneuvered several Dust Devil defenders for a short-range goal to make it 2-0.
Rochelle Bryan made it 3-0 with a goal with an assist by Julia Dell' Aquila with 14:27 left.
TAMIU got on the scoreboard with 11:14 left on a goal by Dalia Hernandez with an assist by Maxine Caballero.
The Scorpions had 26 shots, including 14 shots on goal, compared to seven shots by TAMIU and five shots on goal. Scorpion goalkeeper Stephanie Reid, who played 75 minutes, had four saves.
Barjaktarevic knows the Scorpions will have a battle against HBU, a member of NCAA Division I. "We definitely know there's still some things we have to work on. Now we go on the road against a tough team in HBU."
After Monday’s game, the Scorpions will host Oklahoma Baptist University at 4 p.m. Saturday, September 6, at Morningside Park.
