Women's Soccer Scorpions Blank St. Gregory's, 5-0

SHAWNEE, Okla. -- The UTB/TSC women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory over St. Gregory's University Monday, September 3.

 

The Scorpions (2-0), will stay in Shawnee for a game at 1 p.m. game Tuesday, September 4, against Oklahoma Baptist University (2-2). St. Gregory's dropped to 0-2.

 

"It was a big team effort," said Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic. "We were able to get a lot of opportunities in the second half, and were able to control possession of the ball better. A lot of good things happened, especially defensively."

 

Goalkeepers Jacquie Ruiz (55 minutes) and Jessica Hamer (35 minutes) held the Cavaliers to only one shot on goal. Defenders Carling Rootes and Kristin Resing were there to prevent shot attempts.

 

The Scorpions held a 1-0 lead at halftime, thanks to an unassisted goal by Vanessa Gallegos in the 20th minute.

 

UTB/TSC took control in the second half with four goals. Lena Candia, who scored all three goals in a 3-0 season-opening win over Texas A&M International University, scored in the seventh minute with an assist by Lauren Owens.

 

Lorinda Gomez made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 24th minute. Candia scored in the 28th minute and Tiffany Hernandez in the 36th minute, both on assists by Mayra Solis.

 

Barjaktarevic knows that the Scorpions face a bit challenge Tuesday against Oklahoma Baptist, ranked third in Region VI in the first NAIA poll released Monday. "They are a tough team and have already played four games. These games are really important because they are in our region every region game means a lot for the rankings and the postseason."
