Soccer Scorpions Win SAGU Tournament

Candia scored three goals to lead the UTB/TSC women’s soccer Scorpions to a 5-0
rout over York College (Kan.) at the Southwestern Assemblies of God Tournament

The Scorpions were also crowned tournament championships with their two victories in the four-team tournament. UTB/TSC was 2-0, McPherson College was 1-1, York College was 1-1, and Southwestern Assemblies of God was 0-2.
Saturday's victory lifted the Scorpions to a 5-2 season record. UTB/TSC is 1-0 in Red River Athletic Conference play.
“It was a great week for us,” Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said about his Scorpions, who defeated McPherson (Iowa) Friday, 3-2. “We played well for all 90 minutes and communicated well on the field. We found the seams to score and did a lot of good things. Our defense was fantastic.”
Led defensively by Carling Rootes, the Scorpions suffocated York and did not allow a single shot on goal. Jacquie Ruiz played 64 minutes as goalkeeper and Jessica Hamer played the final 26.
The Scorpions, who had 30 shots, led in the first half, 2-0, on an unassisted goal by Candia in the 18th minute, and on another Candia goal assisted by Vanessa Gallegos in the 22nd minute.
Candia scored again in the 61st minute with an assist by Aleisha Cassie, in the 70th minute on a goal by Tiffany Hernandez assised by Lorinda Gomez, and in the 79th minute on a header by Cari Brown with an assist by Candia on the corner kick that led to the fifth goal.
Candia, Cassie and Rootes were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Scorpions visit Texas Lutheran University in Seguin Tuesday, September 18, for their eighth straight road game to start the season. They are at home at Morningside Park on Thursday, September 20, against Huston-Tillotson University and again Saturday, September 22, against College of the Southwest.
