Scorpions' Jessica Herrera battles TWU player for loose ball

FORT WORTH -- Olyvia Gaytan and Lorinda Gomez scored goals to lift the UTB/TSC women's soccer team into the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament championship game with a 2-0 win over host Texas Wesleyan University, Friday, October 26, at Martin Field.

 

The Scorpions, the third-seeded team in the six-team tournament, will now face Bacone College game in the RRAC championship game a 11 a.m. Saturday, October 27. Bacone defeated regular-season champion Northwood University, 2-1, in its semifinal Friday afternoon.

 

UTB/TSC, now 12-6, is hopeful of gaining a berth in the NAIA Region VI Tournament Nov. 3-6. Texas Wesleyan ended its season with a 9-7-3 record.

 

The shutout was the fourth straight for the Scorpions, who ended the regular season with two shutouts and shut down Huston-TIllotson University, 7-0, in a tournament first round game Thursday.

 

"We're definitely on a roll right now," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "It was a strong game for us. We're peaking at the right time."

 

Jessica Hamer played all 90 minutes as Scorpion goalkeeper, and had three saves. Defenders Aliesha Cassie, Carling Rootes and Kristin Resing prevented TWU from scoring.

 

UTB/TSC had 24 shots compared to nine for TWU. The Scorpions had an 11-3 advantage of shots on goal.and

 

Gaytan scored in the first half with an assist by Lena Candia in the 33rd minute to give the Scorpions a 1-0 halftime lead.

 

The Scorpions made it 2-0 when Gomez knocked in a header off a feed by Mayra Solis in the 62nd minute. The Scorpions held on the rest of the way.

 

"We're definitely confident going into the tournament championship game," Barjaktarevic said. "We just have to play hard and get it done."
