BETHANY, Okla. -- The UTB/TSC women's soccer team saw its successful first season come to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Southern Nazarene University Saturday, November 3, at Harmon Field in Bethany, Okla. in a NAIA Region VI first-round playoff game.
Southern Nazarene advances to the NAIA Region VI semifinals Monday, November 5 in its home field. The Scorpions ended the season 13-7. UTB/TSC finished third place in the Red River Athletic Conference regular season and won the RRAC tournament championship October 27.
Southern Nazarene scored a goal in the eighth minute on a shot by Randi Duncan with an assist by Megan Ritter.
"We had a defensive breakdown and did not position ourselves well in that first goal," Scorpion head coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "Southern Nazarene is a good team, and they were able to establish stronger presence early in the game. I still feel that on a good day this game is much closer, but we have to get into the stage where we are constantly playing well."
The Crimson Storm scored in 28th minute on a goal by Rachel Eguren with an assist by Kelli Traves.
Southern Nazarene finished with 25 shots on goal compared to the Scorpions' eight. Scorpion goalkeeper Jessica Hamer had six saves.
"We played more offensively in the second half," Barjaktarevic said. "Obviously, everyone is disappointed with the loss. Although our season overall is a great accomplishment, especially winning the conference tournament in our first year, we feel that we could have won this game and continued playing."
Taking the shots for the Scorpions were Lauren Owens with three, and Lena Candia, Vanessa Gallegos and Lorinda Gomez one each.
"We could have done better in this tournament," Barjaktarevic said. "Nobody is satisfied with the way we played today."
Barjaktarevic said he already looking forward to 2008, because the first Scorpion women's soccer team did not have any seniors.
"It was a good season, and more importantly, everybody is returning."
