EDINBURG -- On November 1, The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College played the first athletic competition between the Valley’s two universities in 54 years.

UTPA won a thrilling volleyball match, 3-2, before 800 fans.

UTPA President Dr. Blandina Cardenas and UTB/TSC President Dr. Juliet Garcia made a friendly wager that the President of the losing team would wear the other university’s apparel.

Garcia did that at the UTPA Fieldhouse Tuesday, January 8, showing her support for the Broncs, who defeated The University of Texas-San Antonio, 71-63, in a men's basketball game.

The two Presidents gathered at mid-court at halftime of the basketball game, tossing friendly jabs to each other.

"We hope this is the beginning of a long rivalry again," Garcia said. "I have very much enjoyed working closely with President Cardenas on so many different issues. But I also enjoy a bit of friendly competition. I'm very excited about the renewal of our rivalry."

Garcia presented Cardenas a Scorpion shirt in advance of the next time the two schools meet each other in athletic competition.
