David Nicholson
has resigned as head women’s volleyball coach at The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, a position he accepted less than two months ago.

Nicholson has accepted the position of head women's volleyball coach at Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.

"This is an unfortunate, but short-term setback for our program," Scorpion Director of Athletics Dan Huntley said. "I am committed to bring in a coach quickly that will connect with our program, our university and our community.  While we are all celebrating the current success our baseball team is having this week, my focus must turn immediately to replacing Dave and providing our current players and recruits the attention and commitment they deserve from a coach.  I expect to have a coach in place within the next few weeks."

The Scorpions have won 63 games and lost only 21 in two seasons as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

In 2007 under Coach Marcus Young, the Scorpions finished with a 36-9 record and were tied for fifth in the NAIA National Women's Volleyball Championships. Young resigned in December.

In 2006 under Coach Bruce Atkinson, the Scorpions finished with a 27-12 overall record and 11-1 mark in the RRAC. UTB/TSC advanced to the NAIA Region VI semifinals that season.

As members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) prior to joining the NAIA, the Scorpions advanced to the national tournament in 1988, 1991, 1995, 1998 and 2004.
