HOUSTON -- The UTB/TSC Scorpions women's volleyball team prepared for an
important Saturday match by knocking off St. Thomas University, 30-26,
30-20, 30-20, here Friday, September 21.
The victory in the non-conference match boosted the 24th-ranked Scorpions to 14-4 overall. The Celts (3-6) are new members of the NAIA and hope to be part of the Red River Athletic Conference with the Scorpions in 2008.
"We were a little sloppy in the first game and made too many errors," Scorpion coach Marcus Young said. "Once we got into the groove, we took care of business."
On Saturday, the Scorpions meet a Houston Baptist team that handed the Scorpions four of their 12 losses in 2006. UTB/TSC started the 2006 season with a 6-9 record, including one loss to HBU, but finished the season winning 21 of its last 24 matches -- with all three losses coming to HBU.
Houston Baptist left the NAIA after the 2006-07 season and now is an independent member of NCAA Division I.
"We've watched them play, they're big like us," Young said. "We're going to have play well to beat them."
Against St. Thomas, Talita Milasauskas led the Scorpions with 12 kills, eight digs, three blocks, one ace and a .458 hitting percentage. Jenny Ashley added seven kills, seven digs, three blocks and a .462 hitting percentage.
Katie Japp added eight kills and 12 digs, and Claudia Alarcon had seven kills and 13 digs. Setter Daianarah Bracero had 35 assists.
