Posted October 13, 2007
The UTB/TSC Scorpions wrapped up the Red River Athletic Conference South
Zone championship with a 3-0 victory over Huston-Tillotson University
Saturday, October 13, at the Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.
With the 30-25, 30-13, 30-12 victory, the Scorpions are 5-0 in RRAC South play and 21-5 overall. They have one conference match remaining Saturday, October 20, against Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
The Scorpions, ranked #22 in the NAIA, will be the top seed when they enter the RRAC Tournament in Fort Worth in November.
"We'd like to go undefeated in conference play and really solidify that top seed and win the conference tournament," Scorpion head coach Marcus Young said. "There are a few goals at the beginning of the season what we wanted to do and winning the conference is one of them."
Huston-Tillotson gave the Scorpions a challenge in the first game before UTB/TSC cruised in the second and third games. The Rams dropped to 0-26 for the season and 0-4 in RRAC play. Young was able to empty his bench and allow his starters some rest.
"It's nice when we're able to use our reserve players in there for significant amounts of the match," Young said.
Senior Jenny Ashley led the Scorpions in kills with 11 and a .421 hitting percentage. Talita Milsauskas had nine kills. Setter Daianarah Bracero had 24 assists.
The match was the first of four consecutive home matches for the Scorpions. UTB/TSC hosts St. Thomas University of Houston Monday, October 15, then hosts both Houston Baptist University and Southwestern Assemblies of God University Saturday, October 20.
